Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, we have had to make some DRASTIC changes in our normal ways of providing interpreters. We have for years been able to send interpreters from our office to anywhere within the city with minimal travel time, and no problem being able to provide a LIVE ON-SITE INTERPRETER.
We have had to change the way we provide interpreting services because we realize an important fact that is very dangerous to you, our customers, our Deaf Community, and our interpreters. One interpreter can interpret 5-8 assignments in one day. If they were to interpret for 8 assignments, coming in contact with 8-deaf clients, 8-receptionists, 8-nurses, 8-doctors, not to mention the number of people they would come into contact with in the waiting room, with the interpreter not knowing that they have contracted the virus, they could easily spread this virus to over 450 people BEFORE they find out after 14 days that they are showing symptoms of the virus. |
LUBBOCK DEAF, INC started working on a VIDEO RELAY INTERPRETING platform early last year. Video Relay Interpreting (VRI) is the safe and effective way for you to be able to provide the communication access that the American's with Disabilities act and other various federal and state laws and regulations require you to provide.
The system that we have set in place DOES NOT require any special equipment on your part, nor any special program with potential viruses in them that you have to install. Our VRI platform IS HIPAA/HITECH COMPLIANT meaning that you do not have to worry about any fines or investigations from our wonderful friends, or worry about if your clients/patients personal information is being distributed among the internet prowlers. We are SAFE AND SECURE and we are taking it a step further!
Our Platform does not require you to go buy any special equipment, nor do we need to send you any equipment. Our VRI platform uses your internet that you already have in your office, and an internet connected device that has a web browser. You can use a Windows computer, laptop, Mac, iPad, Android tablet, or Linux based system. Any device that you have available, even a cell phone if you are in a pinch, as long as it has internet access, has a browser window, has a camera, and has a microphone will work. Most all tablets and laptops have this already installed from the manufacturer. This allows us to provide secure, HIPAA/HITECH compliant, ADA compliant, video interpretation in your office, on the farm, in a hospital room, wherever you may be that you have internet access, you now have an interpreter. Now that you have the equipment that you need already in your office, you do not need to worry about the transmission of any diseases via the equipment either!
We have most every situation worked out that you may encounter. No microphone on your computer? NO PROBLEM, you can call the interpreter on their phone and use the phone for verbal communications and the computer for the video! TOO EASY! This is just one example of how VRI can help you in your office.
Please understand that VRI is not an acceptable form of communication in every interpreting situation. We will assist you in determining if VRI is a good option, or if you have a situation that requires an on-site in-person interpreter. For example, can you imagine this situation that is a true story: Deaf woman goes to the hospital to give birth to her baby. The hospital refuses to get an on-site in-person interpreter and says she must use VRI. While trying to give birth, the woman cannot see the screen on the counter across the room. She is in labor and the hospital staff are holding the tablet so she can see the interpreter. The entire birth is now on camera and has been broadcast over the internet. Even though the VRI session was legit, and there was no exploitation of the patients' HIPAA information, the comfort level of the patient was totally disregarded by the hospital. Imagine if you were that new mother! Some things do not need to have a camera pointed at them.
There are many other examples that our staff have been trained to recognize that are not effective with VRI, and we appreciate the opportunity to discuss your situation with you to see if VRI will fit your interpreting needs.
There are other uses for our system. During the Coronavirus Pandemic; you may need to have a all-hands staff meeting. We are allowing our video platform to be used for staff meetings at a much reduced rate, You may need to meet several clients in face-to-face meetings. Even if deaf clients are not involved, we can provide a secure HIPAA compliant video conference for you and your staff to be able to safely navigate through these tough times. Please give us a call so we can see how our VRI system can benefit your company.
